MOVE AWAY FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY

I had my first formal vision sharing in 1995 in a small classroom of a primary school in Yola, Adamawa state, Nigeria. Since then, I have passed through several stages: from local to international. From speaking to a small local audience to an international conference with participants from over fifty nations. God has used the various stages of development to lead me to an important lesson: I need to first become more if I want to do more. I finally understood that if I become better, If you become better, If we become better, things will become better for us.

Personal development is necessary for every leader who needs to lead meaningfully. God wants us to grow because we can do better with that level of transformation. The prodigal son discovered that when he left home to a distant land and corrupted himself. The realization of change and its implementation led to his transformation.

Leaders need to become more to lead more. They also need people around them who are more in capacity to help them in the thinking, planning, organizing and implementation processes. Unfortunately, I don’t think many leaders can boast of that as an achievement. Some time ago, I was invited to speak as the guest speaker at a convention of a Church denomination. The Bishop of the diocese earlier informed me that their information officer will get in touch with me. He finally did. Right from his mail and approach, I knew that he was a person of capacity. My assumption was confirmed when I finally met him. A pastor, but he could also manage and fix some issues with their digital printing machine.

Moreover, I had a conversation with the secretary of an archbishop, who told me that lack of sufficient capacity was one of the main challenges they faced. It was often difficult to get the right people for the right job. He was right. Since 2010, I have trained leaders with different backgrounds in book writing. I have interacted with diverse people with different perspectives. Some have high, while others have low capacity. Book writing training in my opinion is one of the top areas of assessing the capacity of leaders. It deals with high-level reasoning and organization of thoughts. Some who appeared to have verbal capacity are often low in expressing themselves in writing.

Some time ago, I had a conversation with one of my friends, Rev. Solomon Guruza on the topic of capacity of people. He is the senior reverend of a local Church. His thoughts are excellent. “Some have the capacity, but not stable and consistent. Some are stable and available, but have no capacity. Like plenty of water that is not drinkable. Some have the capacity and are willing, but not faithful.” The big question is, how do we make them available, with capacity, stable, willing to serve and faithful? That is why our goal in our organization of helping people move from ordinary to extraordinary is relevant. We are convinced that people can do more if they first become more. Leaders must know that they cannot do more with low capacity. Something new must first happen to us that will improve our philosophy of life before we can have the healthy view and commitment to do what is new and more effective. Jim Rohn captured the idea well, “Philosophy is simply what you know. What you know affects you just like what you don’t know.” He also says, “Out of what we know, we decide.”

I see the drive for new ideas at the international level more than the local. When I started training internationally, I observed that the approach to capacity development is different. Many of the people I met are probably not up there yet, but they are curious about learning. They are driven by the desire to know and intentional about learning conversations.

It is time to make up your mind about the kind of leader you will become. A low-capacity leader will attract low-capacity leaders, but a high-capacity leader will attract high-capacity leaders. Don’t blame others for their low input. First, look at yourself and honestly ask, do I deserve what I am getting? My advice for you is to move away from ordinary to extraordinary, from a leader to an extra leader. Extra leaders are people who engage in personal development. Are you one of them? Would you love to be one of them?

  1. I have listened to Evangelist Pusonnam Yiri at different platforms, as a speaker at church gathering and podcast on LinkedIn. I vividly know that there nothing so powerful than an idea whose time has come. The vision that began since 1995 for some decades has yielded much desired results in transforming lives of many people from being ordinary to extra ordinary individuals. The motivational Speaker always emphasized the need for self development, self discovery and re-discovery. This can only be attained by becoming more to lead more in every faced of human life. Though, I’m yet to lay hands on any of his documentaries, I look forward to accessing any for better understanding. Like Isaac Newton says “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”, Evangelist Pussonam Yiri is one. More unction to function, sir.
