Why are we underdeveloped if we have educated people? Is development not one of the top goals of education?
A friend once told me he got a PhD because he didn’t want people to disrespect him. Is he right or wrong? Is that the goal of having a PhD?
I have seen many Africans striving for higher educational qualifications (which is good), but the more we do that the more Africa remains underdeveloped. I had an experience that I will never forget. I trained a group of highly educated scholars in book writing. I asked them to power their laptops and start writing about what they knew without consulting a book. To my surprise, most of them couldn’t start. It was a huge struggle for them to think independently without consulting an external source.
At this point of my journey, unless I am convinced through the development of Africa, I have concluded that there are no educated people in Africa. The continent must develop if there are educated people. Any education that doesn’t lead to self and communal development is not education at all. Let our education show in our results, not titles. Do we have the justification to claim the space of educated people when we live in an underdeveloped situation? Arise and show your level of education through development not title.
